Dear Colleague, Yes, we know it's a bit late, but September was a very busy month at CCUK. We have been working with our members in several big project areas: the sustainable supply chain, skin mental health and well-being and ‘Totally Made in the UK’. We also were joined by representatives of eight member companies at a very successful member’s day hosted by Scott Bader at their site at Wollaston in Northamptonshire for networking and discussions. We are very grateful to them for their hospitality and to our members who are engaging with these exciting collaborative projects. On the international front, our focus has been very much on France, but also China and the USA and we will be present at the Global Cosmetics Cluster annual meeting in Paris and Cosmetics 360 in October for which our members can receive a discount code. There is a lot going on event wise for CCUK over the next few months, we have the MOCRA webinar at the end of October, CCUK will host a stand at the London careers fair on the 10th November, and mid November we will be attending SCS Formulate (Registration now OPEN, click here to register). We have had a record influx of new members recently, who will be featured in our October and November newsletters and this month we extend a warm welcome to New Holland Extraction and Carbogen Amcis. Best wishes, Gill, Jane, Kirsty, Katerina, Alastair and Maria |

Regulatory Makeover - Navigating the impact of MoCRA webinar - we will also be collaborating in a webinar on the topic of MoCRA, which has been organised by Santander Bank, who will be highlighting their Navigator platform, and Export Assist/Registrar Corp on 31st October at 2pm GMT. In December 2022, US Congress passed a bill that will forever change the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) authority over cosmetics regulation in the United States. Gone are the days of lenient regulation imposed by the US FDA now that the Modernisation of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (known as ‘MoCRA’) has come into force, introducing a comprehensive set of requirements that are sure to impact business. MoCRA focuses on provisions that will require domestic and foreign firms to register with the US FDA, designate a US agent for FDA communications, ‘list’ (or register) their products, collect and report serious adverse events to US FDA, and many other transparency and safety elements. Though there are still many unknowns, there are steps companies can take now to prepare and educate themselves on what these changes mean for them and their business. For this webinar, Santander is teaming up with Registrar Corp USA, a leading global specialist in FDA compliance, and Cosmetics Cluster UK, to provide you with all the necessary information to navigate the new regulation, including how the MoCRA came to be, what the new requirements mean to facilities and responsible persons, and how this will transform the future of the industry. During the webinar, Jaclyn M. Bellomo MBA, Director of Cosmetic Services & Software at Registrar Corp USA, a seasoned expert in regulatory affairs with a background in industrial and physical pharmacy and cosmetic services, will not only explain the intricacies of MoCRA but also unveil Registrar Corp's comprehensive range of compliance assistance solutions. There will also be an introduction from the US industry perspective, from Rachel Grabenhofer Managing Scientific Editor of Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine. Santander has now launched a new Santander Navigator tiering structure, which has changed the way to register for events. All of their events can now be accessed through the free Explore subscription package, where you can register for this and future events, as well as access exclusive insights and a number of other exciting features. To register for this event as a new subscriber, register your details to activate your free Santander Navigator subscription here: Home (santandernavigator.co.uk) Once you’ve registered for the platform, make sure to register for the event itself in the ‘Events and activities’ tab. In person members’ networking event On what was an exceptionally hot day for early September, the attendees first heard about Scott Bader's history and the company philosophy of employee ownership 'the Commonwealth' from CTO Mark Cooper as well as viewing a short video celebrating the company's centenary. Then before a networking buffet lunch, Mark Stanion, Ricky Greenwood and David Black introduced the company 2036 vision, Ecovadis Gold certification and sustainability ambitions. Members then began group networking discussions around the CCUK projects on Totally Made in the UK and the Sustainable Supply Chain which will feed into the project activities and plans. The day was rounded off with a tour of the site to view production areas and take in the views of the beautiful country house hq with glorious garden surroundings hidden in rural Northamptonshire. Attending the day, Adam Young, UK&IE Sales Director, Croda Europe Ltd, said: “CCUK’s networking event was an excellent opportunity to learn more about our different members’ businesses and see where we can potentially help each other. It was also great to see some familiar faces again, and meet some new ones! The discussions led by Jane and Gill were thought provoking and hopefully some progress was made on those topics. Mark and the team at Scott Bader were fantastic hosts and a big thanks to them for such a well organised day.” |

Roadblocks to Sustainability Symposium The Canadian Cosmetic Cluster, with the Global Cosmetic Cluster and Cosmetic Valley, is committed to addressing the roadblocks to sustainability in the cosmetics industry. As part of this initiative, they are inviting companies in the cosmetics industry to discuss the challenges they face in becoming more sustainable. They believe that sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a core value that should be reflected in everything we do. It is recognised that many brands in the cosmetics industry face significant challenges when it comes to sustainability, such as: Sourcing sustainable ingredients Reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain Developing sustainable packaging solutions Implementing circular economy practices Addressing social and ethical issues in the supply chain
These challenges can be daunting, but by working together, we can find solutions that benefit everyone. That's why they are inviting cosmetic companies across the supply chain of the industry to share their challenges. During the Roadblocks to Sustainability Symposium we will have like-minded companies who are committed to sustainability and who are willing to collaborate to find solutions. This is open to everyone, clusters and all companies that are interested. Feel free to share with your cluster members. BBSRC STFC facility access funding for bioscience partnerships round 2 BBSRC and STFC are excited to announce BBSRC-STFC facility access funding for bioscience partnerships round two. The £1.1M project supports bioscience business-academic partnerships to solve industrially relevant challenges using STFC facilities. The focus of the programme is to assist in accelerating the development of early-stage products or services requiring further research and innovation. For more information: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/bbsrc-stfc-facility-access-funding-for-bioscience-partnerships-round-two/ The deadline for submitting an expression of interest is 31st October 2023 at 4:00pm. Please feel free to contact: business.unit@bbsrc.ukri.org with any queries. The programme supports access to advanced analytical technologies and expertise at STFC’s large-scale facilities in the UK, such as at Harwell and Daresbury. The facilities have the capability for neutron, x-ray and laser-based research as well as high-performance and scientific computing. There is also the opportunity to utilise the deep underground science facility at the Boulby Underground Laboratory. The Expression of Interest (EOI) stage of the application process is business led and requires only a submission of a ‘challenge statement’ that describes a problem which is hindering the development of a product or service. STFC will then evaluate whether this can be solved using one of the available facilities. An academic partner is not required at EOI stage, but you are encouraged to seek one as early on in the process as possible. If invited to the full proposal stage, a workplan will be developed in collaboration with STFC. Projects can be undertaken over a 12-month period and are expected to be between £10,000 and £100,000. A company contribution, based on facility costs and dependent on company size, is required. For more information come to the launch event webinar on 28th September 2023: Launch of BBSRC-STFC Facility Access Funding for Bioscience Partnerships Tickets, Thu 28 Sep 2023 at 10:00 | Eventbrite BBSRC are also holding two in person events over lunch: |
